Keep your mane sane
It all started as a hobby five years ago that later became too interesting for her to drop.
Lynn Komu, like many women who decide to go natural, was struggling to find the right natural products to use for her hair.
She opted to use oils as they were more readily available… but, fast forward to today… she now makes ointments and moisturisers for bearded men.
“I think it was a very easy solution that was right there and I took it. Yes, beard oils are a thing, I didn't invent them. It is not necessarily hard to take care of a beard because only a few know how to maintain it and that's why only a handful of men have a great looking beard,” she said.
Komu says she googled beard oils and that's when she realised that many existing brands were not using oils to their advantage as they were very cosmetic in the sense that they only provided one with a shine or a nice smell and that was it.
“With that I decided I wanted to make a product that is practical by adding tea tree and Jojoba oils to prevent men from getting ingrown hair when they shaved.”
Her client list includes men who used to import beard products from South Africa who are very relieved to use a local product.
The oil enthusiast who works from home says she did a lot of experimenting as she didn't want to give her clients just a product, but rather give options… hence the name By Design. The clients choose what scent they want in their end product. Her products are made for black and coloured men as she believes many products on the market don't cater for them.
The winning entrepreneur currently has products including beard oil that is used for ingrown hair, a beard mist for refreshing the beard during the day and a beard balm which is a thicker version of the beard oil which she recommends to clients with a thick beard to give it a boast.
“I will, in the future want to make shampoos and conditioners but I want to first perfect everything I have. We millennials are in the information age so a lot of us are comfortable making our own products and I don't want to be doing it the way it has been done in the past. The future of self-care is giving customers flexibility,” she concluded.
The products range from N$60 to N$170. Komu does countrywide deliveries and orders can be made from her social media platforms.
