Three learners from the Kavango East Region have been selected to take part in this year's Confederation of Southern African Schools Sports Associations (Cosassa) athletics championships.

The three learners competed in the Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU) national athletics championships from 12 to 13 April, where close to 200 athletes from all 14 regions took part.

The athletes are Beatrice Masilingi from Noordgrens Senior Secondary School (SSS), Christine Mboma from Shiyungwe SSS, and Katenda Stefanus from Likwatera Junior Primary School.

Masilingi won three gold medals in the 100-, 200- and 400-metre races and set a new record over 400 metres.

Mboma won a gold medal in the

1 500-metre event, while Stefanus won two gold medals in the 3 000-metre and 1 500-metre races.

The director of education in the region, Fanuel Kapapero, said he was very happy that the region had stars in the making.

“These are very special learners to us because they have been selected to represent Namibia on a national level,” he said at a luncheon hosted in honour of the athletes.

Kapapero said his directorate felt they had to do something to show their appreciation for what the learners have done for athletics in the region.

He said the education directorate would buy blankets and running shoes for two of the gold medallists because they are underprivileged.

The chairperson of the NSSU in the region, Paulus Mutangara, said he was proud of the learners and promised to continue supporting their development.
