The Katutura Central Constituency will on Thursday host a Christmas lunch for pensioners in the community who are registered as voters in the constituency.

According to constituency councillor Rodman Katjaimo, senior citizens will have to show their voter cards because more people than anticipated may show up for the event.

At least 50 pensioners are expected to attend the event at the Commando Hall.

The constituency office plans on making this an annual event.

Katjaimo said after the lunch, the pensioners will receive a food hamper to last them the remainder of the month.

He added that treating the elderly to a meal and a Christmas gift may not change their lives, but will remind them that they are appreciated.

“We must take care of our elders. We will not just give them a meal and then leave. We are giving them combos that they will eat for at least ten days.”

Each constituency has a budget of N$20 000 from the regional council to purchase food hampers, and Katjaimo said he had approached the business community to sponsor the lunch.

Katjaimo said he also started a project this year to help repaint the houses of pensioners in the constituency, some of which have had the same coat of paint since the 1960s.

“Our target was to paint at least 50 houses yearly,” he said, adding that they have painted at least 37 this year, with sponsors such as Pupkewitz coming on board.
