Kalahari Desert claims second victim
Another civilian has been killed by a Namibian soldier attached to Operation Kalahari Desert, three months after an unarmed taxi driver was shot by an NDF soldier manning a police roadblock in Windhoek.
Early reports of the incident yesterday afternoon indicated the man, who the police said was in his early 30s, was shot when he attempted to flee from members of the Kalahari Desert operation.
The regional crime investigations coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Abner Agas, confirmed that the incident took place close to the Single Quarters in Katutura, but could not confirm any details of the shooting.
Few details were available yesterday afternoon, including the identity of the victim or whether anyone was arrested in connection with the shooting. This was the second fatal shooting linked to the widely criticised anti-crime operation, which was first launched as Operation Hornkranz last year December.
In early June, outrage erupted when Zimbabwean taxi driver Talent Fambaune (22) was shot in the head by an NDF soldier, Gerson Nakale (38), when he tried to avoid a temporary roadblock set up by Operation Kalahari Desert.
Nakale was charged with one count of murder and remains in custody after bail was refused.
In August, it was reported that a man was shot and wounded by an NDF officer during a Kalahari Desert operation in Walvis Bay. The man survived.
