Kaaronda calls for Unam presidential inquiry

The Namibia National Labour Organisation (NANLO) President Evilastus Kaaronda has called on President Hifikepunye Pohamba to institute an independent inquiry to investigate alleged corrupt activities at the University of Namibia (Unam). Kaaronda said last Friday that rampant corruption and self-enrichment schemes are now &ldquo;no longer news&rdquo; at Unam and urged for a thorough probe into the institution&rsquo;s affairs. He said those in high positions were abusing their powers. The call for a presidential inquiry follows the recent suspension of Unam Pro Vice-Chancellor for Administration and Finance, Dr Boniface Mutumba. Although no charges have been laid against Mutumba at this stage, allegations of maladministration and others have surfaced via sources at the university. Kaaronda said Pohamba intervening is the best option to root out corrupt dealings among council members and added that Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director Paulus Noa has failed to take to task those in the wrong. &ldquo;The ACC is toothless. Noa is clearly failing, even before he attempts to investigate on such cases. He is only targeting small government officials found driving government vehicles for personal things at odd hours.&rdquo; &ldquo;We thus strongly call on Pohamba, as the chancellor of Unam, to put an end this madness. So Unam must therefore be placed under care and maintenance management, until a thorough probe into its affairs is complete,&rdquo; Kaaronda said. Kaaronda also took a swipe at how Unam is handling Mutumba&rsquo;s alleged corrupt dealings. He said the suspension is causing confusion, as people who not sure whether Mutumba was guilty of anything or whether he was simply a victim of witch-hunt. Kaaronda said that in 2012 he was sued by Unam after exposing that millions had allegedly been embezzled at the university, and that despite him producing evidence, he was ignored. &ldquo;Unam is a public institution that is surviving on public money, so would it not be best that something should be done to uproot this sickness once and for all?&rdquo; Kaaronda said.
