Namibia's Currie Cup coach Lyn Jones has appointed Eugene Jantjies as the captain of the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias during this year's SuperSport Currie Cup competition.

The Gobabis-born player has developed under the guidance of Phil Davies to become the national team's first-choice scrumhalf and has been given authority to lead the squad with a fresh approach.

Commenting on his appointment Jantjies said: “I am very proud to be given the opportunity to captain the Welwitschias this coming winter.

“We have a good blend of local people in this year's squad, and I hope to bring out the best in them, as I always give 100% when putting on the jersey.”

Namibia's director of rugby, Phil Davies, was delighted with the appointment, saying: “Eugene has been an integral member of the national team over the past few years.

“He is an excellent professional who commands the respect of his peers. This appointment clearly demonstrates his continued development as a player and leader.”.

To strengthen Jones's new coaching team, FNB Wanderers coach JP Nel has been entrusted with the duty of developing back-line players, and his appointment is with immediate effect.

He offers much experience and expertise as a former Super Rugby player with over a decade of experience playing at the elite level.

On Nel's appointment, Jones said: “We had extremely strong candidates applying for this role. JP will bring a new voice and ethos to a squad that needs confidence and empowerment, following last season's challenges.”

Nel for his part said: “I'm really looking forward to the season ahead. Working and developing the best and most promising players in the country will be an honour for me as I play my part in bringing the best out of the Welwitschias.”

The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias are sponsored by Namibia Breweries Ltd and First National Bank Namibia, along with Paratus Telecom as sponsor of the Namibia Rugby Union.
