Peter Shalulile’s Mamelodi Sundowns have booked a place in the MTN8 final after a 3-0 win over Golden Arrows in the second leg of their semi-final match at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday night.
A goal by Shalulile, Divine Lunga and a late stunner by Neo Maema gave Sundowns the goals. In the semi-final first leg, they drew one-all with Arrows – which gives them a commanding 4-1 victory on aggregate.
The closest Sundowns have come to winning the most rewarding domestic trophy was five years ago but they were beaten in the final by defunct Bidvest Wits.
However, the current crop of players in the Sundowns squad are hungrier to grab every title on offer. With much credit going to Shalulile who continues with his rich vein of form, having been voted the Best Player of the Season in the Dstv Premiership last season.
As it stands, Shalulile has made three appearances in the competition. Together with Knox Mutizwa of Golden Arrows and Swallows Ruzaigh Gamildien, he is leading the score charts with two goals.
In the Premiership Shalulile is joint at the top with Royal AM's Victor Letsoalo (four goals each) in five games for Sundowns this season, after scoring 15 goals last season and ending second on the chart behind Bradley Grobler of SuperSport United who had 16 goals.
With this, Sundowns will play Virgil Vries Swallows or Cape Town City at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Wednesday.
