It's about saving Namibia - Itula
Independent presidential candidate Panduleni Itula says his aim is not about voting President Hage Geingob out of power, but about saving the nation.
Addressing supporters at the Helao Nafidi Business Expo in the Ohangwena Region on Saturday, Itula also claimed that many Swapo leaders, including cabinet ministers, have no understanding of the country's constitution.
“How can you be leading the nation, but you have no understanding of the Namibian Constitution? You are just leading by your own will. You are entitled to opinion, but your opinions are not the law, let the Namibian people understand.
“When I went around to teach people about the constitution, I did that to the Swapo leadership as well and I was surprised that ministers did not understand some of the provisions.
“How can you lead if you don't understand the rules? Article 3 says the official language is English and then they don't even speak English,” Itula said.
He also claimed that “everywhere you go, the land is sold to foreigners”.
“I have even seen buses with government number plates, but they are written in Chinese. Namibians stand up; your country is going and if it has not yet gone you are now at the stage to make decisions. This is not the election year to vote Comrade Geingob out of power. Comrade Geingob is not the one with a problem, there is something else and if you do not vote right this year you will lose your country.”
Itula said he joined Swapo in 1971, but only got his membership card in 1976.
He said he was once a Swapo youth leader, and was detained and suffered under colonial oppression at a very young age.
He said he was with senior leaders like the late Leonard Nangolo Mukwiilongo, Milton Kaukungwa, Jona Nghitula and many others who groomed him.
“There is nothing wrong at all with Swapo and I can proudly display my Swapo membership card. I never wavered and I am still where I started. I will never betray the principle and the consistency that made me join Swapo party. When they heard I was going to stand as an independent candidate, the first thing they said was that I must resign. Telling me to get out of Swapo, are you the one that made me join?” Iitula said.
“Even if they chase me out of Swapo, how will they take Swapo out of me? These people have no respect for the rule of law, which is cardinal to the Namibian Constitution…”
Itula said once voted into power, many of his ministers will be young people below the age of 35, who will be selected based on capability.
He said he will also make sure Ohangwena as a whole will get direct benefits from fishing quotas, and not individuals who are enriching themselves.
