Intense fight for hockey league glory under way

The 2016 Bank Windhoek Outdoor National Hockey League kicked off last weekend in Windhoek. Nine matches were played at the Davin Trustco artificial turf at Windhoek High School (WHS) and at Windhoek Gymnasium.In the men’s premier league, defending champions DTS opened their title defence with a 14-0 demolition of Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST).In another premier league encounter played on Friday night the Saints, a team consisting mainly of schoolboys, almost shocked the 12-time national outdoor champions Unam. The youngster led 3-1 with only 15 minutes remaining but Unam saved their blushes as Isascar Kavee Tjikuniva scored two back-stick goals to secure a draw.On Saturday evening, Unam returned to form as they cut BDO Wanderers to pieces with a 10-1 thumping. BDO Wanderers had opened the scoring in the third minute through the stick of Dian von de Wet, who dribbled past three Unam defenders before beating Roben Kambinda in the Unam goal. That would prove to be the only highlight for Wanderers as Tjikuniva and Ronaldo Kapuire each scored four goals. They were complimented Baggio Karigub, who scored two screamers for the students’ team. In the women’s premier league, 2016 indoor silver medallists Saints thumped Unam Hoppers by 4-2 on Friday evening after leading 2-1 at the break.On Saturday evening Unam Hoppers got their act together and defeated BDO Wanderers 2-0 thanks to goals by the national team pair Maggy Mengo and Ins Louis. In the men’s reserve league, Gurus hockey club, who were relegated from the men’s premier league, showed that they gained tremendous experience in the top flight when they recorded their first win over Saints on Saturday afternoon. Unam Rookies also collected maximum points in the men’s reserve league with a 1-0 win over BDO Wanderers at the Gymnasium turf on Sunday morning.Penouua Murangi scored the only goal of the contest before half time. The Bank Windhoek League will continue this weekend, with 12 games scheduled from Friday to Sunday. SPORT REPORTER
