Inline hockey teams head to world champs
Namibian inline hockey players will be participating at the FIRS 2016 World Inline Hockey Championships in Italy starting on Saturday.
“The fulfilment of a dream has come true for many. Two NIIHA (Namibia Ice and Inline Hockey Association) national teams will be participating at the championships,” read a statement by the inline hockey association.
According to the statement there are four divisions: Junior Men, Junior Women, Senior Men and Senior Women. Namibia will be sending teams to participate in the Junior Men and the Senior Women divisions.
These matches will take place from 11 – 17 June with our junior men mostly playing on the rink in Roana and our senior women in Asiago.
A record number of 17 national teams have entered the Senior Women’s division, and with the return of Canada and France, the competitive level will be very high.
Senior Women Pools:
Pool A: Sweden, Canada, Switzerland, Chinese Taipei and Czech Republic
Pool B:USA, France, New Zealand and Australia
Pool C: Namibia, Spain, India and Great Britain
Pool D: Italy, Finland, Iran and Latvia
The Junior Men’s division consists of 18 national teams with some new entrants joining the excellent experienced teams.
Junior Men Pools:
Pool A: Czech Republic, Colombia, Canada, Namibia and Slovenia
Pool B: France, Mexico, Chinese Taipei, Latvia and Sweden
Pool C: Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Korea
Pool D: USA, Spain, Great Britain and India
The Hodegart Asiago Arena, built in 1977, can host over 2200 spectators. The newly enlarged Roana Pala Robaan can host 1300 spectators. Live streaming of most games will be broadcast on http://firs.rollersports.tv/live. The first games for two Namibian teams will be on Sunday, 12 June with the Junior Men playing Columbia at 09:50 and Czech Republic at 21:50; and the Senior Women playing Spain at 16:00.
