Iberconsa fleet resumes fishing in Namibia

Spanish fishing firm Iberica de Congelados (Iberconsa) has resumed operations of its hake vessels in Namibia, amid a local fishing industry related strike, Faro de Vigo reports. All Iberconsa’s fishing vessels based in Walvis Bay are fishing again in Namibian waters, although most of them are “still stuck”, the Spanish publication reports. Iberconsa, whose majority stake was recently acquired by Portobello Capital, owns directly five vessels, but the company also operates some boats through the fishing group Vieira, controlled by Iberconsa-owned Cadilu Fishing. According to images from positioning system AIS, most of these vessels were held at Walvis Bay until last week, as another trawler belonging to Pereira’s subsidiary Blue Sea Fishing started operations at the beginning of this week. For its part, Pescanova’s 23 vessels belonging to Namibian subsidiary Novanam are still unoperative, and activity has not been registered by the fleet since the beginning of the strike in October.
