‘I am a risk taker’ - Aurora Dacosta

Desiree GasesThe 24-year-old Aurora Dacosta grew up in Windhoek. Aurora Dacosta is the CEO of Aurora’s Denim Jeans. She is also a third-year student studying marketing/business at the International University of Namibia (IUM).Aurora Dacosta decided to start her business Aurora’s Denim Jeans on 29 July 2019. Aurora was motivated by her mother to start this business, due to financial difficulties and being a university student getting an extra source of income makes a big difference. Aurora Denim Jeans has been consistent in providing high-quality jeans. Today that same business is flourishing. It has over 14 000 followers on social media and also delivers countrywide and now Africa-wide. In the two short years of being in business, Aurora has worked with well-known and very influential public figures. “I’ve been in the styling and fashion industry for the past two years, in these two years I’ve had an opportunity to work with various Namibian influencers. I had the honour to partner up with one of Namibia biggest influencers, Maria Nepembe (award winner). I also won a novel by Jackie Phamtose, a South African social media influencer and an author, at Pombili Shilongo’s mentorship class. In the long run I managed to register the business under Luna Consultant (Bipa).”Getting into the retail industry wasn’t easy for Aurora, because she faced a lot of challenges in the beginning. The retail industry is huge and coming in the industry as a young woman wasn’t a piece of cake. She was challenged by many things like cash-flow management, the fact that there were was a lot of competition, difficulties with things like finding the right marketing strategy and getting the exposure she needed. But Aurora persevered and kept pushing. She got advice from professional business owners she knew and blended it with her knowledge of her marketing/business course and with that she over-came all her fears. “I am a risk taker,” says Aurora.When asked what message she would like to give to the aspiring youth, Aurora said: “I advise the young ones to finalise your studies, think rationally, believe in yourself , face your fears , challenge yourself and take action.”
