Hilongwa hails Matheus
Jonas Matheus is the new IBO international bantamweight champion after a brilliant performance in South Africa.
Boxing promoter Joseph 'Smokey' Hilongwa has lauded new International Boxing Organisation (IBO) international bantamweight champion Jonas Matheus for putting up a great fight and bringing the belt home to Namibia.
Matheus became the new champion after defeating South Africa's Makazole Tete on points in their bout on Sunday afternoon in the Eastern Cape town of Mthatha.
Despite fighting away from home, the boxer proved he has the heart to take on the best in the world.
“Many people were not aware that this fight was going to happen because the card was drawn up so fast and we did not even have time to hold press conferences.
“We are, however, proud of Matheus because he did what he can do best outside the country,” Hilongwa said.
The promoter attributed Matheus win to hard work in the gym and to the dedicated coaching team that accompanied the boxer to South Africa.
The national super bantamweight title holder began his boxing career in 2010 and represented Namibia at the 2012 London Olympics.
“It is too soon to start speaking about title defences, but we will plan this after he has taken a rest.
“For now, the boxer will have to rest a bit in order to recover the energy he used on Sunday afternoon,” Hilongwa said.
The promoter also sang praises of Salute Boxing Academy for making their trip to South Africa possible.
“The Salute academy is dedicated to creating champions in Africa and the world.
“I believe that we are going to create more champions before the end of the year.”
