Her Liberty formed

Radio personalities Jossy Nghipandua and Tanyaradzwa Daringo have teamed up with young feminists, Tikhala Itaye and Paskaline Ngunaihe, to form Her Liberty Namibia, an organisation aimed at empowering young women.
Tjil caught up with Tanya and Tikhala, who explained that Her Liberty Namibia is a young feminist organisation that aims to promote gender equality in the country. The organisation was established with a mission to develop, fortify and encourage leadership and feminism by creating an enabling environment for young women to act as catalysts of change within their various communities.
Asked about how the four founding members came together, Tanya explains that they were all part of different human rights and empowerment organisations, before they found one another. She says they all longed to be part of an organisation that encourages self-sufficiency and independency. Tanya further explains Her Liberty Namibia will also aim to nurture female leaders in society and start lasting programs in disenfranchised communities. We hope to start projects in communities that will be taught from generation to generation and for which community members will take ownership, she says.
Asked about the name of the organisation, Tikhala tells us that they wanted a name that women can identify with.
For women to be strong and independent, they need to be liberated, she says.
Liberty is the name of a strong woman. We hope to also feed off the power and legacy of the great Dr Libertina Amathila, Tanya adds. There is power in the word liberty. We want a world where women are free from oppression, free from dependency and free from inequality - a world in which women are liberated.
The organisation's programmes will focus on advocacy and outreach, as opposed to capacity building, Tekhila says.
Tanya adds that the sad reality is that many women are in abusive relationships, without even realising it.
Her Liberty also aims to empower women with knowledge and the ability to leave an abusive relationship.
