The health ministry said it has received reports of nine suspected cases of the coronavirus over the past week. Eight test results came back negative, with the ninth sample still to arrive from the Onandjokwe hospital. The negative test results were returned for suspected cases in Rehoboth, Lüderitz and Windhoek, as well as Okahandja and Oranjemund.
Health minister Kalumbi Shangula also announced during a media briefing this morning that government has placed a ban on face-to-face international meetings, which will now be held using video call facilities.
This comes as President Hage Geingob yesterday personally inspected the readiness of Hosea Kutako International Airport to deal with a potential breach of Namibia’s borders by the virus.
The coronavirus global death has now risen to more than 4 000 people and there are over 110 000 infections, mainly in China.
“I was worried about the situation. I had to come see for myself if we are ready. If diseases break out, we must be ready. Nurses must be on standby,” the head of state said during a briefing after assessing the facilities at the airport, including infrastructure.
