Hambukushu festival postponed

Kenya KamboweRUNDUThe annual Hambukushu Cultural Festival has been postponed due to the countrywide coronavirus state of emergency.The festival, launched in 2015, is celebrated during the first week of May at the Mukwe sports ground in the Kavango East Region.According to coordinator Damian Maghambayi, due to the global pandemic, they are unable to host the event this month.Maghambayi said the festival will either be hosted after the state of emergency has been lifted, or it will be postponed to next year.Regrettable“Despite the readiness of the preparatory committee to host the event, it is regrettable that the Hambukushu Cultural Festival will have to be postponed,” Maghambayi said.He added that the aim of the festival is to unite the Hambukushu traditional community in Namibia and those in neighbouring countries such as Botswana, Angola and Zambia.The festival also aims preserve the culture of the Hambukushu people for future generations as well as to promote food production and subsistence farming, he said.“It is through this event that we promote values among the traditional community to refrain from alcohol abuse, laziness, gender-based violence and many other unethical deeds,” Maghambayi said.
