For the first time ever, Namibian learners sat for the newly introduced Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate Advanced Subsidiary Level (NSSCAS) last year, and according to academics and learners, it was a huge shift from mainstream learning.

This, however, did not deter Ndateelela Ndjamba, who took up the challenge and came out victorious after completing her AS levels with a total of four As. The Gabriel Taapopi Senior Secondary School learner also scooped the position of third best achiever in the country.

Asked how she managed this feat, she told Ewi that she focused on prioritising her studies and always putting her education first.

“In all you do, you should enjoy your high school life, but remember your education matters more. Just make your academic life your greatest priority,” Ndjamba said.

She added that managing your time is crucial. “I know it is not easy, but it is definitely worth it.”

In terms of challenges, Ndjamba said there was a massive shortage of textbooks because of the new syllabus.

“I was fortunate enough to have access to the internet and other resources. I did this in order to gain additional knowledge on my subjects such as accounting and business studies,” she said.

“It was also challenging to receive assistance from our teachers, because the content is also new to them,” she added.

Discipline is key

Sakaria Eelu, the principal of Gabriel Taapopi, said he is very proud of his learners and they managed to perform very well despite the challenges surrounding the new syllabus and the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The very first time we had to offer AS, we obviously experienced some challenges. We really have to be thankful the accomplishments they have achieved. It should send a message to the academic community that the level of discipline will always allow them to achieve the best. “We look forward to the academic year and to produce more excellent results,” he said.

Flourish

Looking to the future, Ndjamba said she plans to study chartered accountancy and has been accepted to the University of Cape Town. She has also secured a scholarship from the Allan Gray Foundation.

“My advice to young people is to surround themselves with like-minded beings so that they can flourish in their future.

“Also surround yourself with people who push you to the best of your abilities,” she said.

She further thanked the Gabriel Taapopi community and wishes her school well.
