Griquas make it third-time lucky

It was third-time lucky for the Tafel Lager Griquas as they battled to a superb 28-13 (halftime 16-8) win over the Pumas in the final of the 2019 SuperSport Rugby Challenge at Saldanha Stadium in Saldanha Bay yesterday afternoon.It was a massive relief for the Griquas who had lost in both previous SuperSport Rugby Challenge finals, including last year against the Pumas, when a drop goal after the hooter saw their hearts broken. However this time around they led from start to finish, never allowing the Pumas to take the lead.For the Pumas their impressive unbeaten run finally came to an end.Since losing in the SuperSport Rugby Challenge quarterfinals in 2017 they went through 2018 unbeaten, claiming the title along the way, and then were unbeaten in 2019, including beating the Griquas in the pool stage before slipping up in the final.In the match, Griquas captain and flyhalf George Whitehead was in immense form, marshalling his backline superbly while making pinpoint kicks throughout, while three penalties and two conversions gave him a 13 point haul.But it was prop Khwezi Mona who took the plaudits putting in a monumental effort up front while making a number of carries and tackles to deservedly claim the man of the match award.
