Gladiators impress on Ghana tour

The Brave Gladiators defeated the Black Princesses 2-1 at the Lizzy Sport Complex on Friday to make it two wins from two in their three-week training tour to Ghana in preparation for the 2014 CAF Women&rsquo;s Championships. The Gladiators, who fielded a relatively strong team of young players, were under tremendous pressure from the hosts in Accra, and they fell behind with five minutes left to play before halftime. After the halftime break, the Gladiators regrouped well and coach Jacqui Shipanga&rsquo;s talk seemed to have been instrumental as the ladies produced the best of comebacks away from home. The Gladiators won a free kick after Iyakondjelwa Amukoto, who had an impressive run down the right flank, was brought down close to the Ghanaian area. The team got their equaliser through a well-taken free-kick by the reliable Zenatha Coleman, and what followed was real dominance from the Namibians. With 16 minutes to go before the end of the match, Germany-based playmaker Thomalina Adams volleyed home. To add some stability and impenetrability to the defence, the Brave Gladiators coaching staff then brought defender Ester Amukwaya on as Namibia held on to record a 2-1 victory over the Ghanaians. In their first match of the tour, the Gladiators played against Ideal ladies FC, a team that plays in the Ghana Women's First Division. Namibia won that game 3-0 with goals from Zenatha Coleman and a brace from Juliana 'Poppies' Skrywer. The Namibia team is based at the state-of-the-art Lizzy Sports Centre in Accra and is boosted by the Germany-based trio of Adams, Lorraine Jossob and Vewe Kotjipati. According to team officials players such as goalkeeper Agnes Kauzuu, defender Stacey Naris and midfielder Emmerencia Fredericks have shown a lot of maturity. WINDHOEK-NFA.ORG.NA
