Geingob lauds bravery of women
President Hage Geingob has lauded women for their brave journey towards gender equality and urged for more urgency and action when it comes to women's rights.
This is according to a presidential statement issued on Sunday in commemoration of International Women's Day.
The day was commemorated under the theme 'I am Generation Equality: Realising Women's Rights'.
The theme is aligned with the United Nations' new multi-generational campaign, Generation Equality, which marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most progressive roadmap for the empowerment of women and girls everywhere.
While reflecting on the theme for this year's commemoration, Geingob expressed Namibia's commitment to gender equality.
“The 2020 theme for International Women's Day reminds us with urgency about our collective responsibility to ensure participation of women in all layers of governance and economic activity as a symbol of freedom and equality in society.
“Since independence, Namibia has made commendable progress in advancing gender equality.
“However, International Women's Day is a reminder that more should be done at a legal and policy level to ensure equal participation of women in all activities of human endeavour,” Geingob said.
He said Namibia is committed to accelerating gender equality and arresting the scourge of gender-based violence through appropriate policies and interventions.
“It is the right thing to do for inclusive economic development and a safer society for all to become a reality,” the president added.
Geingob, the recipient of the 2018 African Excellence Award from the Gender is My Agenda Campaign (GIMAC), commits to further actions for gender equality through urgent targeted actions, including sound legal and policy frameworks.
Geingob is one of six heads of state to have received the GIMAC award since its inception in 2005.
In observance of International Women's Day, last Friday all the churches at Rehoboth celebrated the day at the Ebenhaeser Lutheran Church through song and poems.
