President Hage Geingob has called on women to join the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) and urged those already in the force to aim for promotion.
Geingob was speaking at a commissioning ceremony at Rundu on Friday where 42 army cadets were commissioned.
Four of the cadets who successfully completed their 17-month training are women.
“I am glad that four female cadets completed this training since it is important that we see greater representation of women at all levels of our defence force,” Geingob said.
“I challenge more young women to join the Namibian Defence Force and urge those already in the force to aim as high as possible and assume key staff and command appointments in the NDF,” Geingob added.
He said if all stakeholders make a concerted effort in motivating and encouraging female soldiers, more young women would have the confidence to join the Army, Navy and Air Force.
Geingob told the new soldiers that their journey had just started and that they should work hard, remain focused and show patriotism and loyalty towards Namibia.
“Remember that an army can only be dependable if its officers have embraced the ethos of discipline, strong character and hard work,” he said.
“Through this training programme, you have enhanced your knowledge of military doctrine, tactics and skills. With this new-found knowledge, you will be able to heighten your courage so that when that day comes, you will be able to stand tall in defence of the Land of the Brave,” Geingob added.
The president also called on the young officers to acquaint themselves with information technology.
“A military officer does not only need to study military aspects. Nowadays, with the rapid advancement in technology, it is crucial that our military officers acquaint themselves with the latest information related to technology,” Geingob said.
The president also used the opportunity to comment the NDF military school for living up to its mission and vision, which is to provide training to all members of the NDF, enhance their knowledge and skills in order to maintain the required standard of professionalism in the force.
