Fun KBA action returns
Basketball action resumes today and tomorrow at the University of Namibia (Unam) following a lengthy break due to university examinations.
The Khomas Basketball Association (KBA) Live Cup, formerly known as the KBA Cup, will kick off the second round of the basketball season today, with the first match set to start at 18:00 and the last game scheduled to start at 20:00.
The Live Cup is contested by all First and Second division male teams and all female teams.
Teams meet in the Round of 16 in home and away games, with the standout match being the one between Zula Eagles and Unam Raiders on Saturday at 16:00.
Allan Nghixulifwa, the competition director at KBA, told Nampa that this is the game to watch because Raiders are currently on top of the Second Division while Eagles are anchoring the First Division.
“Eagles will have to prove that they belong to the top league, while Raiders will want to make a statement to say they can challenge teams from the top league”.
Another exciting match-up will see The Lions face Unam Pacers in an all First Division match of the cup competition on Saturday at 18:30.
“The Lions, who are the defending champions, struggled to beat the Pacers who were promoted just last year,” added Nghixulifwa.
Other matches will see Unam Rebels face Blue Devils at 18:00 this afternoon, while Unam Wolves face Plaza Warriors at 20:00 this evening.
NUST Blues will take on Lingua Mwangole 1 at 12:00 on Saturday and DHL Titans clash with Afro Stars at 14:00 on Saturday.
The next Live Cup matches will be on 19, 20 and 21 July, after which the winners will proceed to the quarterfinals, where Lingua 2 and the Barleys will join them after receiving a bye in the Round of 16.
In the female section, only one quarterfinal match will take place between Unam Sparks and NUST Eagles.
The winner of the match will then proceed to the semi-finals where they will face the Divas.
The other semi-final will be between BAS Falcons and the Lions Ladies.
The games are played at the Unam basketball hall and admission is free.
The clubs are funding their own league activities, while some individuals have come on board with sponsorship, including KBA president Penda Hangala of Zula Wear, who pledged N$50 000, while Sky Jia Fan of the Chinese Clinic in Wernhil Park Shopping Centre, who sponsored the basketball rims worth N$60 000 and a further N$20 000 for medals and the trophy.
The KBA League resumes on 16 July.
The 2016 league kicked off on 1 April.
