Civics Football Club defender, Laurence 'Bobby' Kaapama, died at his home yesterday morning from what is suspected to be an asthma attack.
According to a family member the 29-year-old who is also a former Brave Warriors vice-captain was found lying dead on the floor by a fellow resident who became suspicious after not having seen him since Saturday.
“He was last seen on Saturday after work. He came out of his room, went to the toilet and back to his room again,” said the devastated relative.
“On Sunday other residents started to wonder where he was and on Monday night another resident broke the bedroom window but could not see anything as it was dark.
“It was yesterday when the other tenant returned and saw him lying on the floor.
“It appears he got an asthma attack and probably could not find his inhaler and there was no one else around to help him at that time.”
Civics team manager Paul Stramis described the late Kaapama as a “disciplined and well-behaved player” who always played his part as expected of him.
“During our last trip to Rundu he fell ill and we had to take him to a clinic there. But besides that he was a very healthy person and that [asthma] was his only problem,” said Stramis.
“We were planning on finding him another capacity within the team in future as he was not young anymore, but his skills and experience were needed to take the team to greater heights.”
At the tender age of 18 Kaapama begin his career at the now defunct Hot Flames FC alongside Jamunovandu Ngatjizeko before trying for the Namibia Premier League under the banner.
In 2004 he signed a contract with the South African club and after a year there he returned to Namibia and was signed by SKW. He later joined Eleven Arrows, where he was a top performer during 2010 before moving to. He also represented Namibia as part of the under-23 national squad.
