Fish River festival to hit Mariental

Mariental in Hardap Region will play host to the third edition of the annual Fish River Sports Festival from 7 to 10 December.
The festival is aimed at bringing people together through football and netball. It has a total budget of N$120 000, of which N$100 000 is for football and the rest goes towards the netball competition. About 32 teams are expected to participate and the tournament is open to any team for entry. The football tournament was first won by Try Again in 2015, after they defeated Untouchables from Schlip 2-0 in the final. The 2016 edition which was hosted in Rehoboth and saw Untouchables defeating Airport Eagles via penalties after a goalless draw. The third edition will see teams from all over the country compete, with Upington-based Mainstay United participating for the second time.
Vendors will be able to sell their wares at the soccer matches, with a stall fee of N$600 for the weekend.
The football winners will receive N$50 000, 20 gold medals and a floating trophy, while the runners-up will receive N$25 000 and 20 silver medals. The netball winners will receive N$10 000 and 12 gold medals, while the runners-up will receive N$5 000. The semifinal losers will receive N$2 500 each. The registration fee per football team is N$3 500 and netball sides pay N$1 200 each.
The draw will be conducted on Friday at 19:00 at the Mariental Youth Centre and all teams are urged to send two representatives. The closing date for registrations is today.
