Family of 18 pleads for help after fire

A family of 18 in Ohainengena village in the Ohangwena Region is appealing for assistance from the public after a fire broke out at their homestead last week, burning down four huts.
Village headman Festus Paulus, who confirmed the incident, wrote a letter on the family’s behalf.
He said the fire broke out on 12 January during the afternoon, and was caused by a five-year-old who was playing with fire, spreading quickly to other huts.
“The accident left Ndiikoyele Ndamononghenda without her national documents, ID, birth certificate, pension card, bank card, church certificate and clothes. All her personal belongings burnt in the fire,” Paulus said.
The process of bringing the fire under control was delayed as there were were only children around when the fire broke out, and there was no water, he said.
Gutted
Family spokesperson Ferdinand Kamati (30) echoed the plea for public assistance, adding that among the items destroyed were beds, mattresses, clothes and the national documents of some children.
“Everything we owned was burned in the fire. Our beds, food, pots, utensils, our clothes… All lost in the fire,” he said.
While they are grateful for assistance from neighbours, Kamati said they need to replace their blankets and seeds for sowing, hopeful that it will rain soon. The family depends on subsistence farming.
