Excitement expected at The Dome Classic

Staff Reporter
Bruce Fordyce, nine times South African Comrades Marathon winner, arrived in Swakopmund on Tuesday in preparation for The Dome Classic happening at the Swakopmund Indoor Sport Centre this weekend.

This amazing sporting event will be held in the biggest enclosed sports venue in the southern hemisphere and will bring together numerous sports stars.

There is no other event of this kind in the region.

The aim is to attract thousands of visitors of all ages, and with a variety of sporting interests, to listen to speeches from these great athletes, to have time to talk with them one-to-one, to participate in a fun run, a Crossfit competition and a bodybuilding competition.

South African Olympic pole-vaulter Okkert Brits was also expected to arrive on Tuesday.

He was to talk about his athletics career, especially his pole vaulting achievements and being the first African to break the 6m height.

Ebrahim Moerat, ex-Springbok rugby player, under-18 coach and youth sports development promoter, will also join the group of stars, with a special interest in meeting sports teachers and potential coaches.

Although welcome to all the events, sporty kids will have a special opportunity to listen to and spend time being coached by Fordyce, Britz and Moerat in the Youth Event today.

Other stars attending the event include explorer Riaan Manser - the first person to circumnavigate Africa by bicycle - who broke the world record for the fastest row from California to Hawaii.

He was accompanied by his wife, Vasti, during his recent exploit.

Bodybuilding sensations Marius and Annelize Döhne and Dylan Ridley will join local bodybuilding star Alethea Borman to spend time with bodybuilding competition entrants and enthusiasts.

Namibian rugby players Jacques Burger and Tinus du Plessis will also be in Swakopmund for those wanting to ask them questions at the Namibian Stars event.

This talk show style event will also include De Wet Moolman (karate), Albinus ''Danny Boy'' Felesianu (boxing), Alethea Borman (bodybuilding), Michelle Vorster (MTB cyclist), Gaby Ahrens (shooting), Ruben Soroseb (Paralympic powerlifter) and residents Dave Hammond (ice and inline hockey) and Gildo Leite (track runner).

The expo stalls will feature various sports-related supplements, sports gear and gym equipment, and food and drinks will be available for sale.
