Namibia Media Holdings (NMH) this week continued its information sessions in Erongo for the Town of the Year 2017 competition.
“The message is very clear,” said Lesley Goreseb, Karibib CEO. He said the town would move forward in the spirit of the Harambee Prosperity Plan. “We will participate in this competition and to make us win, you should vote for Karibib,” said Goreseb.
Maggy Mbako, public relations officer at NMH, told delegates to collect ambassadors for their towns. She highlighted the importance of finding something special to be marketed and said NMH would assist with promotion through their publications.
Stefan Saayman from Channel 7 Radio, a partner in the competition, said that the Town of the Year is able to bring all Namibian towns into the spotlight, potentially taking them all forward.
In Swakopmund, a finalist in the 2016 competition, more than 70 people attended the session including Mayor Pauline Nashilundo, Henties Bay Deputy Mayor Anna Hamutenya and other representatives of the coastal towns as well as guests from Walvis Bay and Arandis.
“I encourage all towns to take part in the competition. Only those who participate can win and those who do not, lose out,” Nashilundo said. She added that the general aim was to unite residents, to reach the final and to work hard and together.
Hamutenya was equally enthusiastic about the second edition of the competition. “We have immediately confirmed participation and want to win this time,” said the deputy mayor of Henties Bay. As the winner of the South African Dorp van die Jaar competition, the recipe for success is “the integration of the populations,” said Hamutenya.
Nik Klazen from the African Leadership Institute (ALI), another partner of the competition, explained his involvement to emphasise “transformation to better leaders”.
“We need to take responsibility for ourselves and our future,” said Klazen and called for an end to excuses and recriminations. “The people have to trust each other and be more productive; the positive side-effect of the competition is to bring the people together,” he said.
This is the second edition of the competition and 38 towns will participate. A regional winner for the four areas - central north, north, west and south - will be selected and the final four will vie for top honours at the Namibia Tourism Expo 2017. NMH will host information sessions in all four regions until mid-July.
The competition is supported by various partners: Nedbank Namibia, Coca-Cola Namibia, Pupkewitz Nissan, Vivo Energy, Channel 7 and African Leadership Institute.
