You don’t need to be an economy boffin to know that Namibia is in deep trouble when it comes to debts, jobs and the financial well-being of households and companies. Even before Covid-19, the country’s economy was facing an uphill battle. The pandemic was simply the last nail in the coffin.

The bad news does not end there, unfortunately. Namibia is staring into the abyss with a potentially deadly third wave of infections creeping throughout the country. There are few, if any, who don’t worry about the health of their families and friends, colleagues and themselves. It’s hard to stay optimistic in times like these.

But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. When Namibia gets it wrong, we get it very wrong. But, sometimes, we get it right. And you don’t need to be a medical or governance expert to see that when it comes to the availability and accessibility of vaccines, our government and private sector are doing a great job.

Now it’s up to us to line up and get the jabs that could lead to herd immunity and a new chance at getting the country off its knees and working towards a better future.

Not only that, the more of us who are vaccinated, the fewer Namibians will die from this terrible disease and the fewer people will need to take up beds in our struggling hospitals.

The vaccines are there. Health staff are ready to administer what can be an injection not only for the health of us all, but the way to put an end to this long, dark time in which stress and fear not only for our collective health - but our economy - has infected our everyday lives.

Do it not only for yourself. Do it for your family, your friends, and the country.
