The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) coordinator for //Karas, Augustinus Ucham, on Tuesday urged election officials to be neutral at all times during the upcoming regional council and local authority elections.
“We need to distance ourselves from active politics, be neutral and treat all the different parties and independent candidates equally.
“As an ECN worker, you should maintain neutrality. Yes, as per the constitution of this country, you have the right to belong to a party; however, if you are working for ECN, ECN is the commission of all the parties and independent candidates so you should be neutral,” he said.
Very important task
Ucham, who was speaking at the start of five days of training for the presiding officers, called on ECN workers to be professional as they will be dealing with people at different levels of education and social and economic status.
He stressed that the election process is a very important task and said ECN officials have to guarantee that the elections are credible, mistake-free, free and fair to ensure that peace and stability prevail in the country.
“We are the only ones to ensure that the elections are credible and mistake-free. The task lying ahead of us needs our undivided attention, it needs commitment from us, it needs us to gear towards action and results and we must prepare ourselves psychologically and physically so we manage to do this process correctly as stipulated in the Electoral Act,” Ucham added.
Each one teach one
The training will educate presiding officers on election processes, after which they are expected to transfer the knowledge gained to polling officials.
The ECN has recruited 648 election officials, while 87 teams will be deployed in the seven //Karas constituencies for the elections, slated for 25 November.
