Ebola donation: a show of solidarity

Last week we aired our displeasure at the poorly co-ordinated response by the international community in dealing with the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Countries like Liberia and Sierra Leone are basically in the care of the world health community, as they struggle to contain this humanitarian crisis. The situation has been declared an international emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO). They have since appealed for aid and the rapid deployment of staff and resources to assist the affected countries. While some African countries rushed to secure their borders and issue travel advisories, Morocco continued with its routine flights to the affected nations, as a show of solidarity. It is true that the Ebola outbreak is a devastating one and the over 2 000 deaths recorded so far says a lot about this deadly disease. But we can&rsquo;t allow the affected countries to fend for themselves without offering support of any sort. Clearly not. According to reports, the United Nations expects nearly US$1 billion to fight and protect the millions of people affected by this outbreak. It is against this background that the Namibian government dipped into its solidarity fund by pledging N$11 million to help contain this humanitarian crisis in West Africa. Namibia is part of the international community and we should view this donation as a show of solidarity with those affected by this devastating illness. Obviously some will argue that we have our own problems at home, with thousands languishing in abject poverty, but there is nothing wrong with helping others in distress. Namibia has been assisted by many during its gloomy days and it is only appropriate that we too support those in need.
