Dordabis to host football tournament
The settlement of Dordabis will be a hive of activity when teams from surrounding areas take part in the annual Frederick Arie football tournament on 1 and 2 December.
The tournament, named after late Windhoek Rural constituency councillor Frederick Arie, will be hosted by Black Arrows Football Club, which Arie formerly owned.
The chief organiser of the event, Arie's daughter Roswitha Arie, said the tournament was established in 1980 by her father and that she joined in 2002.
“My father started this tournament to help the young men of the area to be involved in sports activities as most of them did not continue with school beyond Grade 7.
“Usually the profits go to a charity called the Frederick Arie Hope Foundation at Dordabis,” she said.
Arie said after an absence of two years, the tournament will be bigger and better and people from the surrounding areas are excited about its return.
“The tournament brings people of the usually sleepy settlement together and some even sell food to make some money. We know a lot of people cannot afford basic necessities and with the new school year not that far away, they can make profit to help their children with new school uniforms and stationery,” she said.
The tournament is open to any team except those in the Namibia Premier League. Only three NPL players are allowed to form part of a team.
The tournament amount is N$20 000, with the winners walking away with N$10 000, 15 gold medals and a floating trophy, while the losing finalists will get N$5 000 and 15 silver medals.
Both teams in the semi-finals will receive N$2 500. The registration fee per team is N$1 300, which is payable by 30 November. The draw will be conducted on 30 November at the Dordabis Primary School.
