Don't just focus on the poor - Irimari

ILENI NANDJATO ONDANGWA Oshana governor Elia Irimari has called on authorities distributing coronavirus food and other aid in the region to not only focus on those classified as poor or those living in informal areas. He said the current situation has affected everyone, irrespective of their social status. Irimari was speaking at Ondangwa during a handover of maize meal to the Ondangwa town council in Oshana and the Helao Nafidi town council in Ohangwena. Presented by Onambango Stores, the donation of 450 10kg bags of maize meal is valued at N$32 000, and will be distributed to those affected by the pandemic. Donation Onambango Stores has mini-markets in the Oshana and Ohangwena regions. Ondangwa received 222 bags of maize, while Helao Nafidi received 228. Onambango Stores owner Johannes Shihepo said he has been doing business in the Ohangwena and Oshana regions for many years, but hasn't given anything back to these communities. “For over 10 years, I have been doing business in these communities… Due to Covid-19, we therefore feel this is the right time to give back,” Shihepo said. “We donated to the local authorities for them to see what they will use the donation for. They are the ones who know the status of their people and we will not command them in terms of how the food will be distributed.” Equitable distribution “Let us ensure equitable distribution of resources. Our people from all sectors of life are faced with hunger due to Covid-19; let us not only look at those classified as poor or those in informal areas, but make sure that everyone in need has been assisted, especially with this food distribution,” Irimari said. “The Office of the Prime Minister and the business community have done substantive work to make sure that they avail food to assist whoever is in need. “Therefore, when we are distributing food, we must not look at social status, but at need,” the governor said.
