Well-known streaming platform Donlu Africa recently announced that it will start paying artists for their streams on the platform.

The owner and founder of Donlu Africa, Llewelyn Adams, says moving to a pay-per-stream system came about after months of relentless efforts and hard work.

With this, Donlu Africa will introduce subscription packages to fans, which will enable them to stream over 2 000 songs on the platform.

The packages that will be available for fans are N$10 (weekly), N$60 (monthly) and N$600 (annually).

“We have signed an agreement with a Namibian company to offer fans secure payment options via PayPal as well offline payments via BlueWallet and E-Wallet facilities.”

Adams said the move to partner with the Namibian Payments Processor to offer secure payments via PayPal is to lure a bigger international audience.

According to him, the platform will become available to artists from the rest of Africa during the first half of 2022.

“All songs previously loaded as part of an album that was sold on Donlu Africa will qualify. All new songs loaded will be done on the new system as well, unless otherwise advised during the submission process in which we can still avail the song for free to your fans.”

To qualify, songs by an individual must have a minimum of 1 000 streams.

“We're on a mission for fairness and transparency when it comes to paying artists. The fee structure for music will be N$0.70 per every stream after 1 000 streams, and N$0.80 for podcasts per stream after 500 streams.”

The Swakopmund-based artist 1Dawn expressed his delight at the announcement. “I just read it on their website. It is the best news ever!” he said.

The first payments to artists will be made in December 2021, thereafter payments will be made every 30 days.
