Kasu enjoys success of year''s third tournament
The Katutura Sport Union (Kasu) is determined to continue its efforts to develop grassroots sport despite a shortage of funds to sponsor sport in Namibia.
Over the last two weekends, Kasu held a football and netball tournament, dubbed the Nefie Kandjii Cup, at the Khomasdal Stadium.
On Sunday, the action came to an exciting conclusion with Truck Team defending their title as netball champions after beating Otjiuana 30-16 in the final.
With that success, Truck Team took home N$5 000 while Otjiuana claimed N$2 500 as losing finalists.
In the football it was Renamo Bucks, who hail from Okombomi in the Epukiro District of the Omaheke Region, that took the honours as they beat Something or Nothing by a solitary goal scored in the second half.
Bucks claimed N$10 000 as winnings while Something or Nothing, who are a side from Katutura Central, took home N$5 000 as consolation for being runners-up.
This was the third tournament held by Kasu this year.
While the body has not held any league matches this year, Kasu chairman Kuveri Tjonga said their activities have been well supported.
“We did not have league matches because we are struggling to find a venue to play on a regularly basis,” he said.
“But we''ve have a very good year because I have received help from a lot of people and I''m just happy to be able to give the youngsters a chance to showcase their talent.”
Numbers game
Tjonga went on to state that Kasu will conclude the year with another tournament in November, which will be called the Kasu Dreaming Cup.
This will strictly be a tournament for teams affiliated with Kasu.
The union held a Valentine''s Cup in March and the Winter Cup was held in June.
Despite little funding, Kasu is determined to continue staging such events, Tjonga said.
“The numbers that come to our events mean that a potential sponsor can reach a good deal of young people,” he said.
The recent tournament had 39 football teams and 12 netball sides.
With each team allowed to register about 20 players, including two technical staff, the football alone accounted for 780 people.
The netball teams accounted for an additional 120 people while the fans swell that number even further.
“These are all individuals with spending power while some are on the verge of joining the work force, which makes sponsoring this event an advertiser''s dream,” Tjonga said.
“But in the absence of that sponsorship, we''ll continue doing our best and accept whatever help comes our way,” he added.
