Thenga was established in December 2020 and within two months launched its platform offering a variety of products from local suppliers.
Founder Adderley Williams, originally from Tsumeb, has been in the digital marketing profession for some time now. Based in South Africa, he saw an opportunity for e-commerce to grow in Namibia. He also realised just how much Namibians would benefit from having access to a convenient, online shopping experience.
“What sets Thenga apart from other online stores is its collaborative nature - the space offers businesses and influencers the opportunity to get their worth by sharing their talents and services with a brand that believes strongly in their success,” Williams says.
The young company has engaged potential clients, and say they have noticed the excitement of potential customers eager to learn about online shopping.
Since their launch, a small community has grown who are excited about Thenga and what it offers.
With every endeavour there will be good and bad times.
One of the challenges faced by Thenga are the technical requirements of its business, and with anything digital there can be complications and it can be ‘hit or miss’. But the Thenga team always bounce back swiftly.
After every rainfall there is a beautiful rainbow and one of Thenga’s accomplishments is that they have managed to set up home offices across two different countries - Namibia and South Africa. The teams are “very capable and enthusiastic freelancers with skills varying from search engine optimisation (SEO), social media, sales, digital marketing, design and writing,” Thenga founder Williams says.
He says over the next five to ten years, Thenga hopes to become the leading online retailer across several countries in sub-Saharan Africa and hope to achieve a great deal of success in their media efforts through their sister company, Media by Thenga.
Their main goal of Thenga is to move e-commerce in Namibia forward. So for them success is a combination of increased online sales, growth and getting more people to see the potential of e-commerce.
“My advice for aspiring people is to start! Starting is the first step, acknowledging risk is the second and moving forward with intention is the third,” Williams says.
