David versus Goliath
LIMBA MUPETAMI
The Brave Warriors of Namibia have their work cut out for them as they head into the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers this coming Saturday against Senegal.
Senegal is a powerhouse when it comes to football. The players are full of talent and when they step into the field, they mean business.
They are backed by talented bunch of players who ply their trade for top clubs in Europe, such as Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, Abdou Diallo and Krepin Diatta. So, when it comes to class, they are a level above the Namibians.
The Namibian squad are the minnows. Most of the players are locally based. The rest ply their trade in South Africa. So, when the two sides meet, it will be a definite test of character and mental strength for the Warriors.
Will they hold their own or play to the drums of Senegal, is the real question. Of course, the Namibians didn’t make it through to the qualifiers by sheer luck. They worked for it. But now is the time for them to perform above par and that means each player going above and beyond in ensuring that they show what they can do.
For every goal Senegal score, the question is whether Namibia will respond. Will we be able to create chances for the likes of Peter Shalulile and Benson Shilongo to kick a goal into the net?
Who will be the player who will orchestrate play in the midfield? Will that individual be able to hold Idrissa Gueye and control the midfield? It’s going to be a serious test and it’s up to the players to decide how they want to be remembered.
This is the time for them to create chances for themselves and to create opportunities to be picked by foreign clubs. I know the task is not easy, but with the right attitude and game plan, it can be done and I really hope that it will play out like the story of David and Goliath in the bible, when David, just a little boy, in this case like Namibia, killed Goliath, in this case Senegal, with a slingshot.
