Damian van der Ross, a Grade 9 learner at the Danie Joubert Combined School in Mariental, scooped the 2018 sports star of the year award at a prize-giving ceremony on Friday.

Van der Ross won a silver medal in the boys 100m at the Confederation of Southern African Schools Sports Association (Cosassa) event in Botswana this year, after being selected for the Namibian under-16 athletics team.

He was also taken up into the Cosassa team. Van der Ross is the second recipient of the award at the school, after Romano van Wyk scooped it last year. The award replaced the old sportsman and sportswoman of the year awards.

The rest of the Danie Joubert awards recipients were as follows:

Chess - best female player: Liliana Kamburute and best male player: Renolt Gawachab.

Archery - best female archer: Anrika van Zyl and best male archer: Wian van Zyl.

Hockey u-10 - best striker (CJ van Zyl), best defender (Kyla Rohmann and Andru Pretorius) and best progress (Johannes Hoek).

Hockey u-12 - best striker (Christiaan Steenkamp), best defender (Nicole Strydom) and best progress (Bridgedine Bock).

Netball u-10 - best goal shooter (Andria Kaoseb), best defender (Zukeisha Scheffers), best player (Talita Pretorius) and best progress (Lianie van Zyl).

Netball u-11 - best goal shooter (Niricia Neels), best defender (Eisha Saal) and best progress (Javine Jossop).

Netball u-12 - best goal shooter (Chanique Barry), best defender (Nikita van Jaarsveld) and best progress (Mary Jane Neels).

Netball u-13 - best goal shooter (Nkonkwena Ntwala), best defender (Vangee Katjatenja) and best progress (Amore Motinga).

Rugby u-10 - best forward player (Xavier Burger),

best backline player (Ignatius Kandowa and Muhuuaije Ngatajose) and best progress (Tebzodinho Motinga).

Rugby u-11 - best forward player (Troze Jacobs),

best backline player (Ernst Kuhlman) and best progress (Selezano Isaacks).

Rugby u-13 - best frontline player (Mjay van Wyk), best backline player (Romeo Engelbrecht) and best progress (Victor Hanse).
