Dam levels drop 10% in 6 months

The average level of the country's dams has dropped more than 10% since the beginning of April.

While the country has received sporadic rainfall in some areas since the start of the rainy season, there has not been any inflow into the country's reservoirs.

The Namibian Meteorological Service forecasts that rains will set in over most parts of the interior of Namibia by Thursday, except for the southwestern winter rainfall area. The average level of the dams by Monday stood at 41.9% while at the beginning of April it was 56.9%.

Last season the average level of the dams was much lower at 20.8%.



Central Namibia

In the central area, the average stands at 61.2%, while last season the dams were 15.5% full.

The Swakoppoort Dam is currently 73.9% full, while last season it stood at a mere 5.5%. Von Bach is 79.8% full compared to last season's 36.1%.

The Omatako Dam, which was empty last season, is now 23.4% full, while the Friedenau Dam's level stands at 41.5% and the Goreangab Dam at 83.6%.

Last season, these dams were at 22.1% and 93.8% respectively.



South and East

In the south, the average dam level is 41.2%, compared to last season's 25.3%, which does not include the Neckartal Dam.

The Hardap Dam stands at 29.4%, Naute Dam at 72.9%, Oanob Dam at 81.7%, Driehuk Dam at 7.6% and the Bondels Dam at 1.5%. Last season, the levels of these dams were 10.5%, 75.7% and 41.7% respectively, while Driehuk and Bondels dams were empty. The average of the dams in the Gobabis area stands at 42.2%, compared to last season's 1.6%. The Otjivero main dam at Omitara is currently 45.1% full, while last season the level was only 1.8%. The Tilda Viljoen Dam at Gobabis is 25.3% full and the Daan Viljoen Dam stands at 23.8%. Last season these dams stood at 0.7% and 0% respectively.



North

In the north, the Olushandja Dam is 16.1% full in comparison to last season when the level was 21.2%.

The Omaruru Delta Dam in the Erongo Region and the Omatjenne Dam in the Otjozondjupa Region are both empty, the same as last season.
