Crunch meetings for Meatco
Meatco is set to hold a special members meeting later this month at the Wanderers sport club, where nominations will be discussed and voted on for a new commercial representative to be appointed to its board.
Also on 26 October, it will hold a special meeting to provide feedback on the resolutions taken at its annual general meeting (AGM) on 22 June.
The deadline for commercial representative nominations is 19 October and the voting and selection of four potential candidates will take place at the meeting.
Only members who are commercial farmers will be eligible to nominate and vote.
On 30 October, CVs must be submitted to Meatco of the four potential candidates, which will then be forwarded agriculture minister Alpheus !Naruseb on 2 November for a final decision.
Dates still have to be confirmed for the appointment and official inauguration of the new representative.
The AGM saw members handing in a motion dealing with their “deep concern regarding the performance, corporate governance and accountability by the Meatco board of directors”.
The members highlighted that board decisions, as well as financial losses experienced during their implementation, contributed to Meatco's current financial crisis.
They also expressed disappointment over the non-transparent manner in which the board interacted with them, and over the ineffective manner in which members' interests were generally served.
It was expected that a board director to represent commercial farmer interests would have been appointed at the AGM, following the resignation in February of previous representative, Fanie Oosthuizen.
Meatco says it has experienced dwindling cattle numbers from the commercial farming sector.
Commercial farmers were said to be withholding their cattle, mainly because they are unhappy with the decision not to appoint their representative on the Meatco board.
Oosthuizen apparently resigned due to disagreements with the current board, in particular because of the board's position to request agriculture ministry to close the country's borders for weaner exports.
According to Meatco, !Naruseb only accepted Oosthuizen's resignation on 5 September, and directed that a meeting be convened to nominate four possible replacements for his consideration.
