Construction industry mourns Schulz

Staff Reporter
The construction industry recently lost one of its most knowledgeable and outspoken veterans in Karl-Heinz Schulz.
Co-owner of Namibia Construction, the largest company in the sector, and President of the Construction Industries Federation of Namibia (CIF), Schulz died at the age of 55, on 14 May 2016.
In a tribute to the industry stalwart, the CIF this week deliberated on some of the key issues which Schulz worked to address during his six years heading the organisation.
It also announced that current Vice-President of the CIF, Nico Badenhorst, would step into the role of acting president in the interim, as endorsed by the federation’s executive committee.
“As industry icon, Karl-Heinz Schulz was known for speaking his mind,” CIF Consulting General Manager Bärbel Kitchner, said.
“His strength and presence without any doubt were due to the values he lived and his strong belief that what he was doing was right.”
“Leading our industry, Karl-Heinz Schulz always called for greater support for real Namibian companies. Although he welcomed competition, he did argue for a level playing field in the conduct of business and was weary of growing number of foreign companies, most likely sponsored by their governments, being allowed to operate in Namibia, which he felt undermines the development of our industry,” she said.
“He also watched the current trend of ‘tenderpreneurism’ with trepidation, as he felt it would compromise the empowerment and quality of our industry.”
In addition, she said Schultz staunchly advocated for the establishment of a Namibian construction council to ensure greater regulation and monitoring of the industry, and for greater transparency in public procurement practices.
“Karl-Heinz Schuls is deeply respected and admired for having represented the interests of Namibia’s construction industry with such a wealth of knowledge, tenacity, forthrightness and selfless dedication,” the CIF said.
“His death is a tragic loss for his family, for the Namibian construction industry and Namibia.”
Schultz led the 480 member strong CIF since 2010, before which he was an active executive committee member for a number of years.
His association with the federation began prior to independence, under its previous guise as the Master Building Association.
The organisation underwent its name change to the CIF in 1993.
A book of condolences remains open at the CIF offices in Klein Windhoek, at the corner of Stein and Schwabe Street, until Friday afternoon.
The CIF has also set up an e-mail address, [email protected] for supporters wishing to send condolences to the family.
