Coetzee eyes top ten
National time trial champion Drikus Coetzee has set his sights on finishing in the top 10 at the 2018 Commonwealth Games underway in Queensland, Australia.
The young cyclist, who will be competing at the event for the first time, told Nampa on Wednesday he has settled in well in Australia and is looking forward to competing at the championships.
“I arrived at the athletes' village on Tuesday. I thought I would be jetlagged, but after completing two training sessions I feel good and positive,” he said.
Coetzee said he attended a 10-day training camp in Mpumalanga, South Africa before flying to Australia.
“I currently have some good miles in the legs and I am very keen to see how I will do at the championships. I have high expectations and goals, especially in the time trial, as long as the weather plays along,” he said.
Coetzee, who finished as a runner-up in the 2018 Nedbank Namibia Cycle Challenge, said has been training ever since he arrived in Australia, but he is looking forward to finishing in the top 10 when he competes in the individual time trial on 10 April. He will also be competing in the road race on 14 April.
“I am confident that I will do well in the time trial, where I will get to pace myself well. As for the road race, I will try to represent the country well in the breakaway and who knows, maybe we will get a good finishing position.”
Michelle Vorster, Vera Adrian, Dan Craven, Martin Freyer, Tristan de Lange and Coetzee are the cyclists who will be representing Namibia in the male and female events of the individual time trials, road race and mountain biking. Team Namibia will compete in athletics, bowls, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, para-sports and triathlon. A group of 28 athletes and 10 officials are in Australia for the Games.
