The City of Windhoek last week renamed several streets in honour of freedom fighters, who it said had paid the price for independence.

The city also said it was its way of cementing the names of those who had fought for independence in its annals. “We are renaming streets in honour of some of the fallen sons and daughters of our motherland. We are well aware that we cannot honour them enough, as there is simply no price enough to pay for the contributions they made to our society,” said City of Windhoek mayor Kazapua.

The decision to rename the streets was not an easy one, he said.

“I am sure when you launched the requests for these honours, some of you had doubts whether council will favourably consider your applications. We even had to send back some of you to bring us motivations as to why you think your family members deserve accolades in the streets of Windhoek,” Kazapua said.

“I can assure you that this was not done to discourage you, but rather to ensure that the recommendations that the council sub-committee on streets and places renaming sends to council are well-researched, so that council could take an informed decision.” National Assembly speaker Peter Katjavivi thanked the city for honouring the country's liberation stalwarts.

“I would like to applaud the city council for deciding to pay tribute to these heroes and heroines, church and community leaders, by way of naming streets and prominent places in their honour in Windhoek.”

“We recall their selfless contributions to our country, and rejoice that the memory of them will be engraved in the names of these streets. Our rich heritage will therefore be forever written in the annals of history of the beloved country.”

Penning Street was renamed Shikongo Nuunyango Street. Lazarus Street was renamed Festus Lazarus Street. Bahnhoff Street was renamed Professor Mburumba Kerina Street. Ranonkel, Begonia and Rooivalk streets were renamed Tsukhoe //Gowasas Street. Dan Close in Elisenheim was renamed Deon Heunis Close.

Motivating the renaming of the close, Katjavivi said: “It is a painful experience when a nation is robbed of such a young person. The street renaming in his honour is to celebrate the life of this brave boy. We recognise the challenges of human-animal conflict, while embracing the desire for our peaceful existence.”

Lüderitz Street was renamed Judge JP Karuaihe Street, while Julius Nyerere Street in Okuryangava was renamed Reverend Paulus //Gowaseb Street. Eneas Nanyemba Street was renamed Ivako Kapuuo Street. Caesar Street was renamed Reverend BG Karuaera Street, while Dorp Street was renamed EV Mika Kaiyamo Street.

Lucifer and Legion streets were renamed in honour of Reverend Erwin Tjirimuje, while Simeon Shixungileni had Bismarck Street renamed in his honour.
