Churches compare abortion to genocide
Religious groupings opposed to the legalisation of abortion insist that women have no right to terminate their pregnancies.

The Alliance of Christian Churches in Namibia (ACCN) on Friday hosted a press conference to publicly reject the legalisation of abortion in Namibia in conjunction with the Coalition of Churches, National Council of Churches and other church groups.
ACCN chairperson Dolly Nengushe described abortion as a “disguised form of genocide”.
“Namibia’s history carries a lot of bloodshed through the colonial era of genocide, and the legalisation of abortion is just a new disguised form of genocide on innocent lives dying for no reason, except for the benefit of immoral selfish wilful acts of wrong choices.”
Nengushe added that the current Act which relates to abortion is not an infringement of a woman’s sexual health or bodily autonomy, as it protects women’s lives in “life-or-death situations”.
“We take a strong position to stand on the existing Act.
“The Church has a moral obligation and we will not remain silent because our silence will mean that we are in agreement with this abomination against the unborn life. Silence in atrocity is evil, the one that remain silent become equally guilty of the evil, as those that are committing the act.
“The Alliance is not opposing amendments as long as the amendments do not give a licence to kill the unborn, and tearing down the family unit,” said Nengushe
Window-dressing
Morasha Magazi, the founder of a new movement established by young Christian girls called Foetus Lives Matter, said babies should not be discarded because they come at an inconvenient time.
“We find it appalling that the call of abortion is window-dressed as pro-choice, women’s rights, reproductive rights, reproductive justice, while in reality, it is the call for murder.
“We condemn the killing for convenience in the strongest sense. Any law that legalises abortion is a direct contradiction and violation of our constitution,” Magazi said.
Magazi emphasised that young girls need services, homes and institutions where guidance and counselling are available.
Not right
The leader of the Coalition of Churches and Organisations on Ethical Social Justice, Shirley Magazi, stated that abortion is not a reproductive health right and therefore not a woman’s right.
Magazi said men refusing to take responsibility is an effect of abortion.
“Abortion leads to an extended adolescence of men refusing to marry and take responsibility. This leads in turn to various delinquent behaviours including drug abuse.”
She also stated that legalisation of abortion would lead to depopulation, stating that a decreased fertility rate would affect the economy of any country. Magazi further urged churches to open their doors to unwanted babies.
