Police in Kavango East are investigating a case of statutory rape after a Chinese man allegedly fathered a child with a 15-year-old girl at Rundu and left the country.
The age of consent in Namibia is 16.
The Chinese national was allegedly in a sexual relationship with the girl, who was attending school in Rundu, from January until April last year.
The sexual encounters allegedly often happened on the banks of the Kavango River, at the recreation spot known as Rundu Beach.
According to Detective Chief Inspector Melanie Mburu, the girl’s father opened the case on December 30.
Mburu said the suspect, who is believed to have left the country last May, was working in the timber industry.
She said the Chinese national had identified himself as James to the girl.
Mburu further said when the police went to look for the suspect at his workplace, the manager said he did not know anyone by the name of James and in any case his workers had left the country as the timber business was not doing well.
She added that the girl’s family was reluctant to open a case earlier as they were doubting the girl’s story as to who the father was. They were only convinced when a Chinese-looking boy was born.
The police investigation into the matter continues.
