Unicef and AU goodwill ambassador Yvonne Chaka Chaka arrived at Walvis Bay International Airport on Tuesday.
“I am here to urge businesses and government to collaborate, break down barriers and ensure that the lives of Namibian children are improved,” Chaka Chaka, the Unicef goodwill ambassador on malaria and AU goodwill ambassador on prevention and response to violence against children and women, told journalists upon her arrival.
She called on the media to rally behind the rights of children and to combat issues such as child exploitation, child labour as well as children being forced to become soldiers.
Chaka Chaka also advised Namibians not to take the peace they are enjoying for granted and said that she would willingly collaborate with any Namibian to further her humanitarian mission.
The global star, who is recording her 23rd album, uses her music to highlight the plight of communities as a citizen of the world and will participate at strategic events in Namibia as part of Day of the African Child commemorations.
The South African-born Chaka Chaka, known as the Princess of Africa, shot to fame with the hit song ‘I am in love with a DJ’ in 1985, swapped an illustrious musical career spanning over three decades and became an advocate for children, women and human rights. She celebrated a decade of being a Unicef goodwill and Roll Back Malaria ambassador last year.
Chaka Chaka will visit the Sunshine Project today to interact with children living with disabilities and the Walvis Bay Kids Haven Shelter. She will attend the official commemoration at the Tamariskia Community Hall in Swakopmund tomorrow at 09:00.
