Caitlyn Jenner one of Glamour magazine's Women of the Year
Caitlyn Jenner is one of the 25 people honoured as Glamour magazine's Women of the Year, a distinction earned for her willingness to be "relentlessly open," the publication said.
"A year ago Caitlyn Jenner did not have a name," Thomas Page McBee, a trans media advocate, wrote in the award announcement. "The Olympic hero turned reality star patriarch was still living a phantom existence, her changing appearance igniting tabloid frenzy around the rumour she'd run from for most of her 66 years: that she was transgender. But after years of feeling she had to hide who she is at all costs, she is determined to be relentlessly open. And today, she's finding new meaning in her life."
Jenner, 65, won a gold medal in the 1976 Olympic games. As Bruce Jenner, he went on to star on the popular reality show ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ before announcing in April he was transitioning to a woman. Since then, she has made numerous appearances and speeches to support transgender issues.
Hailed as a "champion" for the transgender community, Jenner was recognized at Glamour's 25th annual Women of the Year banquet held yesterday at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Other honourees included actress Reese Witherspoon, fashion designer and entertainer Victoria Beckham, the US Women's Soccer team and ballerina Misty Copeland.
"There was a French activist and writer, Simone de Beauvoir, who said, 'You are not born woman. You become one' ... Words I live by," Jenner said during her acceptance speech.
"Of all the things I've done in my life, Caity is why God put me on this earth: to tell my story; to be honest with myself about who I am. And in doing that, making a difference in the world. And I'm very happy to be living on the other side," she added.
Jenner was joined at the event by her daughter, Kylie, 18.
