Breakthrough season for Iimbondi
Former Brave Warriors defender, Mohammed Ouseb tipped Absalom ‘Kamtjatja’ Iimbondi for success back in 2011.
At the time the young midfielder was still on the books of Oshakati City and was playing in the First Division of the Namibia.
This made Ouseb’s prediction sound ridiculous at the time.
But fast forward five years later, with Iimbondi now playing for recently crowned MTC Namibia Premier League (NPL) champions Tigers, and that prophecy has come true.
Iimbondi was on Friday crowned the Players’ Player and Player of the Season award winner raking in a cool N$50 000 for his awesome displays during the 2015/16 campaign.
It is no surprise that he won these awards because during the season the midfielder was in fact tasked with captaining the Shandumbala team and lived up to the added responsibility.
“At the start of the season, I promised the coach (Brian Isaacs) that I will deliver the league title and I’m just happy I did,” he told the media shortly after Tigers were crowned champions in April.
Packing a powerful shot and an acute positional awareness, Iimbondi’s form has earned him several call-ups to the national team.
He is currently in Ghana as part of a squad of 17 locally based players training in that country as the Brave Warriors get ready to defend the Cosafa Castle Cup on local soil.
Having now cemented his place as one of Namibia’s rising stars; he will hope that he can translate that form to the Brave Warriors.
Meanwhile, Iimbondi’s club coach, Isaacs took the honours in the Coach of the Season at the awards held on Friday.
He beat out Tura Magic’s Paulus Shipanga and Orlando Pirates’ Lucky Kakuva to claim the N$20 000 on offer.
Orlando Pirates’ striker Terdius Uiseb took the league’s Top Goal Scorer award after hitting the back of the net 20 times this season.
He will take home N$15 000.
Leston Nangombe is the Referee of the Season (N$10 000) and Alpheus Shipanga the assistant referee of the Season (N$5 000).
The MTC Premiership Chairman’s award worth N$30 000 was shared between African Stars team manager, Lesley Kozonguizi and Swallows Football Academy for their dedication to football administration and development.
League sponsors MTC also rewarded local football supporter Robbie Savage with N$10 000 and a Cellphone as appreciation for his passionate support for football in the country.
Civics’ striker Donald Geiseb was crowned the Young Player of the Season, an award sponsored by OTB Sport.
MTC announced that all prizes will be paid out this week.
Tigers will receive N$1 million; Black Africa in second place N$600 000, Tura Magic in third place N$300 000 and African Stars in fourth place N$100 000.
