Two social football teams representing Khomasdal in the Thru Pass Sunday League are planning a major community get-together at the start of September.
The two teams, Chicitos/OmKalo XI and Dahlia FC are set to face off at the David Bezuidenhout Sports Field on 3 September with bragging rights as the suburb’s top team on the line.
The event, known as the Khomasdal Community Cup, will also involve a community fun-walk, braai-stalls and fun activities for the kids, such as a jumping castle, Khomasdal Community Cup Organising Committee representative Elton Job told Namibian Sun on Friday.
“The main idea around the event is to plough back into our community, and with that said we have identified three families to whom we will be providing with financial support from the profits generated on the day,” Job said.
The intended beneficiaries are Angeline “Mammie” Engelbrecht, who was diagnosed as diabetic and is blind, and is also on chronic medication.
The second is Saul Waters, a community member who suffered a stroke in 2015, and is in need of financial assistance for his medical bills.
Finally, the organisers hope to assist the family of the late Franklin April, the former Brave Warrior Defender who died in October last year, during a match he played for Dahlia FC in the social league.
April had been the breadwinner of his family, the organisers said.
“To this end, the two clubs are seeking financial support from local businesses as sponsors of the event, to make it a reality,” the teams state in a formal sponsorship letter sent to local businesses.
“We intend to go to the extent of giving sponsors naming rights for the event. This will of course be with the sponsors’ consent and approval.”
The Thru Pass Sunday League was established in September 2015, and is currently in its second season, comprising 12 teams.
Both Chicitos/OmKalo XI and Dahlia FC are non-profit organisations managed by a board of volunteers, and thus far funded exclusively through player registration fees and own contributions.
Other sporting highlights on the day, Job said, would be friendly matches played in the under 10 and under 15 divisions, while visiting teams are expected from Walvis Bay (Pirates) and Rehoboth (to be confirmed). Registration for the community fun-walk is scheduled for between 07:00 and 08:00 on the day.
