Boy back in court for rape, murder
The teenager arrested last Wednesday for the murder and rape of 57-year-old Sarah Jagger made his second appearance in the Rehoboth Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
The 14-year-old boy, whose name cannot be revealed as he is a minor, appeared before Magistrate Andre Matulich on counts of rape and murder.
The case was postponed to 23 October for his legal aid application to be finalised.
Officers came across Jagger's severed foot when they responded to a call for help to put out a fire at a homestead at Farm |Aoxas, about 5km south of Bahnhoff.
They followed footprints from the burned homestead and later found her body nearby. They then followed footprints that led them to the accused.
Prosecutor Victor Mutumbulwa said there is a possibility of arson and violating a dead body charges being added to the two counts the teenager already faces.
The accused was denied bail due to the possibility of interference in police investigations and because it is not in the public interest to grant him bail.
Namibian Sun reported last week that following the arrest of the suspect, Hardap crime investigations coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Eric Clay, said he was initially taken into custody for arson on the same farm where the body was later found. The Jagger body was found in the same vicinity where the foot had been discovered.
“This was good detective work. There was an incident of arson at the farm where we had found the body. Two farmhouses were set alight,” Clay said.
“The police investigated the arson and followed tracks and made the arrest, and then when we investigated after we found the foot we came to the same tracks.”
Clay said they were still investigating to find more evidence linking the arson to the murder.
“It is also a bit difficult because he is underage. We must now try and get a guardian for him. He is currently in detention.”
