Boxers in Kavango East training under tree
The Patrick Kashera (PK) Boxing and Fitness Academy at Kayengona village in the Kavango East Region is seeking funds to develop boxing in the region.
The boxing stable, which operates at the village some 15 kilometres east of Rundu, trains 20 boxers but has no gym.
Kashera, who is the owner of PK Boxing and Fitness Academy and chairperson of the Kavango Boxing Federation, told Nampa on Thursday some of the boxers who train under a tree have the potential to become world champions.
“We are in need of funding. I would just like to appeal to the business community in our country to please rally behind our youthful boxers, because I have so much hope in them in doing the country proud one day.”
The funds needed by the academy to run its logistics and open a gym is N$20 000.
Kashera said despite not having a gym, the headman of Kanyengona village Thomas Kudumo, assisted the boxing stable with a plot where they train.
“After writing numerous letters and going around to various government institutions and schools in Rundu in search of a training facility and actually finding none, the boys train under a tree not far from the school they attend.”
Kashera erected a corrugated iron structure not far from the tree with his own funds, but it has no walls.
“My dream is to strengthen amateur boxing in the region for the country to have boxers competing at professional level. I have no doubt that I can make champions here.”
PK Academy on Thursday sent two amateur boxers, Paulus Ihemba who fights in the 69 kg welterweight division and Raphael Kandjimi who fights in the 64kg light welterweight division, to the Namibia National Shadow games at Eenhana in the Ohangwena Region from 18 to 28 August.
The games will be used as qualifiers for the 2016 African Union Sport Council Region Five Under-20 Games to be held in Luanda, Angola from 9 to 18 December.
